The Gender Identity and Research Society GIRES was established in 1997 when Bernard Reed, OBE, and Terry Reed, OBE helped their transgender daughter win a landmark sex discrimination case. The charity has been instrumental in several positive changes to trans rights in the UK.
A Legacy of Kindness (LoK), is a project that has set out to capture the many voices and experiences of those involved with GIRES throughout its 25-year history. The project has collected over 50 oral histories from the various GIRES stakeholder; a huge amount of physical and digital memorabilia was lovingly sorted and interpreted by archivists and community curators, and will now be made available as a public resource.
