Get Free ORAL HISTORY TRAINING Online

2022-10-04 @ 17:00 - 19:30

Are you interested in queer history, storytelling, and archives? We are looking for volunteers to gather stories about the Gender Identity Research and Education Society (GIRES).

Facilitated by Dr Verusca Calabria (Oral History Society UK Trustee).

Volunteers will be interviewing a range of people who have been connected with GIRES from the 1990s to present. You will record these rich and vibrant stories to inform the archive, events and exhibition outputs.

Before starting the interviews, we will give you free training to learn about effective interview techniques, ethics and using recording equipment.

Tasks will include:

  • Background preparation and research for the (audio) interview
  • Conducting and recording one-to-one interviews (ongoing until autumn 2022)
  • Transcribing and processing the interview content
  • Ethics, do’s and dont’s
  • Working with the project team as well as any other individuals to achieve project goals.

Most of the interviews will be recorded online.

You may need to travel to different UK locations to carry out in-person interviews (optional and with additional training); we will of course reimburse your expenses.

As part of your training you will have a short remote project induction session.

Please note:

This ‘crash course’ requires some self-study & self-initiative. All training resources and supplementary webinars are available online (links provided after successful enrolment).

Interviewing and/or transcribing experience is desirable but not necessary.
